Amsterdam Noord is full of surprises: contrary to the Center and South, where space is a precious commodity, just crossing the Ij gives you the chance to breath out of the city craziness and relax your eyes on long distances.
In this former industrial area, countless hip spots have sprung in the past years – NDSM and EYE being two of the major attractions – and you can easily make this place your home.
But one thing Amsterdam Noord really stands out for is vintage: besides the monthly market of Ij-Hallen, which is easily the biggest vintage market in Europe and it’s the perfect place to replenish your hipster wardrobe for cheap, there are two permanent spots that will drive you crazy for an afternoon if you love design and industrial furniture.
Neef Louis and Van Dijk en Ko., both on Papaverweg, are one next to the other with two huge warehouses where you can find almost everything you need, from original Breuer, Eames and classic vintage icons to industrial accessories and oddities that will fit in your new home in Amsterdam.
Ever needed a horse-bike to ride along the canals? Or a little wooden Rosebud sled to call your own when you fell nostalgic? Or an Ukranian surgery lamp from the last century, to really tie your room together? Or maybe a full set of ampoules from Czech Republic for your new meth startup…you never know.
Even if you just need to replace a cabinet, you’ll get lost in the alleys wishing you have a bigger house to fill. And if you need some time to think about your new loot, sit for a coffee at the Neef Louis Café, hidden in the back.
If you don’t have a car, both stores will take care of delivery and rental for shootings and showroom is also available.
Have a good hunt!
